Real Estate Development Club two days of career discovery in the field of Real Estate.

Graduate Students students from Harvard Design School, Harvard Law School, Harvard Business School, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, MIT Center for Real Estate, MIT School of Architecture and Planning, and MIT Sloan had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with Harvard Alumni practicing professionals in the field of real estate. Two days to discuss career goals as they relate to real estate development, finance, and asset management. Students also had the opportunity for mock-interviews, resume critique, and discuss job opportunities with their firms.

 

 Thursday, November 14, 2002 – Piper Auditorium

1:00 – 1:15   Nicholas Deane [Alumnus - Harvard Design School (GSD)] – Redeveloper, Deane Redevelopment LLC- As the name of his company suggests, Nicholas Deane has never built a new building. Beginning in the mid-seventies with the cast-iron McLauthlin Elevator Building in the North End, Deane Redevelopment focuses on redevelopment of historic and distressed buildings, particularly on distressed environmental sites.

1:15 – 1:30    George Cole [Alumnus - Harvard Design School (GSD)] – Principal, GLC Development Resources LLC- GLC Development Resources is a real estate development and consulting firm currently involved with the planning, permitting and construction of over 3500 residential units in the Boston area. They also advise public, institutional and private sector clients on a wide scope of real estate development issues.

1:30 – 1:45    Tom Robinson [Guest Speaker - Harvard Design School (GSD)] – Managing Director, Legg Mason, Inc- Legg Mason, Inc. is a global financial services company serving many types of clients: individual and institutional investors, corporations, high net worth individuals, government entities, endowments and foundations, pension plans, associations, and insurance companies. Their core businesses are: investment advisory services, securities brokerage and capital markets.

2:00 – 2:15    Sally Baer [Alumna - Harvard Design School (GSD)] – Vice President, Director of Corporate Real Estate, Houghton Mifflin Company- As Vice President of Real Estate for a billion dollar corporation, Sally oversees a portfolio of 3.0 million square feet and the needs of over 3,000 employees within the corporate setting. Houghton Mifflin is a leader in the publishing industry of K-12 and College textbooks as well as acclaimed in the Trade business, being the publishers of such favorites as the Taylor Gardening series. 

2:15 – 2:30    Jim Kostaras [Alumnus - Harvard Design School (GSD)] – Assistant Director, Boston Redevelopment Authority (will hold individual meetings on Friday Nov, 15 from 3-6pm)- The BRA is responsible for development review, drafting master plans, and acquiring, selling and leasing real estate to achieve economic redevelopment for the City of Boston.  His department provides a clear and integrated approach to economic investment that addresses the current and future needs of the city.

Friday, November 15, 2002 - Stubbins

1:00 – 1:15    Joseph Demshar [Alumnus - Harvard Design School (GSD)] – Senior Director of Design and Procurement, AvalonBay Communities, Inc- AvalonBay is a REIT focused on multifamily rental communities - it has a portfolio of approximately 40,000 wholly owned and managed apartment homes in high barrier to entry markets in the US.  It develops and builds approximately 4,000 apartment homes per year.

1:15 – 1:30    Michael Murray [Alumnus - Harvard Design School (GSD)] – Managing Director, Lend Lease Real Estate Investments- Lend Lease offers market presence, product range, investment research, and real estate capabilities.  They operate in all property markets and sectors, are ranked as the number one U.S. manager of tax-exempt real estate assets, and are a leading manager of tax credit investments in affordable housing. 

1:30 – 1:45    Willy Sclarsic, AIA [Alumnus - Harvard Design School (GSD)] - President, Wingate Real Estate Strategies- Wingate Real Estate Strategies (WRES) is the real estate development company within Continental Wingate Company (CWC). CWC is a company operating nationally and is principally involved in Lending, Property Management and Healthcare. WRES is responsible for real estate development for other CWC subsidiaries as well as for numerous other clients not affiliated with CWC.

1:45 – 2:00    Peter Madsen [Alumnus - Harvard Design School (GSD)] – Managing Director, Pembroke Real Estate, Inc- Pembroke Real Estate is a full-service real estate investment and development company specializing in the acquisition, design, development, and management of high-quality, high profile properties. Global in scope, contrarian in philosophy, and steeped in a culture that sees things differently, Pembroke Real Estate has built an impressive portfolio of signature projects in the United States and overseas.

2:00 – 2:15    Raul deBrigard [Alumnus - Harvard Design School (GSD)] – Consultant, Northeast Utilities- Northeast Utilities and their operating companies own numerous parcels of prime real estate in Connecticut, Western Massachusetts and New Hampshire that are available for sale or lease.  In addition, NU experts provide the technical support necessary to help meet permitting or regulatory obligations, as well as train on topics ranging from breaking regulatory and legislative developments, to operations and reliability.

2:15 – 2:30     Joใo Anacleto [Alumnus - Harvard Design School (GSD)] – Real Estate Development Consultant, The Glorious Land Company- Joใo has constructed residential and mixed-use projects in North America and Europe and has worked on an array of hospitality, retail and institutional design projects across North America, Europe and Asia. Long ago Joใo was fascinated by the fact that his career is not a job, but a mission and has since found his place within the core team of the thriving Glorious Land Company (GLC).

 2:30 – 2:45    Heather Culp [Alumna - Harvard Design School (GSD)] – Senior Development Associate, JPI Development- JPI Development operates in markets throughout the United States and is one of the country’s top developers of residential real estate.  Most of their activity is conducted through an investment venture with General Electric Capital Services to build and acquire apartment communities across the country. The venture develops high-end luxury apartments and innovative student housing communities across the country
