The program leading to the degree Doctor of Design (DDes) offers advanced study and research in the disciplines of the built and natural environment. It is intended for persons who have already mastered professional skills and who seek to make original contributions to their fields. The DDes program focuses on applied research and emphasizes the advancement of knowledge in the design and planning disciplines.

A proposal for a focused area of study is required for admission. Courses are selected by the student together with the advisor, to develop a framework for the student's research proposal and thesis. Courses can be selected from those offered by the departments of urban planning and design, architecture, landscape architecture as well as the schools of business, law, government arts, and sciences, and MIT.

Areas of research emphasis include real estate finance, development, technology, planning, urban development policy and international development.
