MUP with Specialization in Real Estate

The program leading to the degree Master in Urban Planning (MUP) prepares students interested in the planning and management of the built environment for careers in the public and private sectors. The accredited curriculum is composed of course work and planning/design studios, which explore the physical attributes of the built environment in relationship to economic, social, political, legal/institutional, and environmental forces that create them.

A core of required and recommended courses provides the critical analytical and technical skills for understanding private and public land development; guiding urban and regional growth; formulating and implementing public programs that shape spatial land-use patterns; and structuring a workable balance among competing environmental, economic, social, and other considerations facing cities, suburbs, and regions. Elective courses allow students to pursue in greater depth individually selected and approved areas of professional specialization, such as real estate development and finance, housing, transportation, environment and sustainability, economic development, growth management, planning in developing countries, design and law, and geographic information systems. Studio courses teach students how to apply interdisciplinary problem solving approaches to planning domestic and international urban, suburban, and regional-scale projects and geographic areas. Courses provide students with leading opportunities to interface with leading real estate professionals from the industry.

The urban planning program is run in collaboration with the Kennedy School of Government, with which the Design School shares three endowed professorships. The urban planning program also draws on the significant curricular resources of the university, including the Business School, the Law School, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
